Choosing a NAS: Synology, UniFi, or TrueNAS?
Synology, UniFi's UNAS line, or a home-built TrueNAS box: an honest look at licensing, lock-in, and upkeep for business and home buyers.
Once you've decided you need a NAS, the next question is which one, and the answer has changed more in the last two years than in the previous ten. There are three sensible roads right now: a Synology appliance, one of UniFi's UNAS units, or a machine you build yourself and run TrueNAS on. Start with two questions, not a spec sheet
First: is this for a business, for personal use, or both? Second: who maintains it in year three? Not who sets it up, who maintains it. Every one of these options can store files. They differ in what they cost you over time, in money or in evenings.
Synology: the most polish, and the most strings
Synology's DSM software is still the best appliance experience in the category. Hyper Backup, snapshots, sane permissions, a mature app catalogue: it's the reason I've recommended them for years.
The hedge is the direction of travel. Synology's 2025 generation launched with third-party hard drives locked out of core functions like storage pool creation and health monitoring unless you bought Synology-branded or Synology-certified drives. The backlash was loud enough that the DSM 7.3 update in late 2025 restored ordinary Seagate and WD hard drives and SATA SSDs to full function, but M.2 drives still have to come from the official compatibility list to form a storage pool. And the licence meter runs elsewhere too: Surveillance Station includes two camera licences, and every camera after that is a paid licence.
None of that makes Synology a bad buy. It makes it a platform where you should assume some features and some hardware choices will cost extra, and where the vendor has shown it's willing to tighten the rules between generations. If you want the richest software and you accept those terms, it remains excellent.
UniFi UNAS: storage as an appliance, no licence meter
Ubiquiti's answer is narrower on purpose. The UNAS line now runs from a two-bay desktop unit up to an eight-bay rackmount with dual 10G ports and redundant power supplies, and the UniFi Drive software that runs them has no recurring licence fees. Snapshots, user access, cloud backup integrations: included.
What you give up is the app platform. UniFi Drive stores and protects files; it is not trying to be a mini server that also runs a dozen applications, and the smaller units run modest ARM hardware. For a business that wants shared storage and backups without a licence meter or a hobby project, that trade is usually the right one, and if the office already runs UniFi networking, the whole thing lands in the management interface you already use. This is what I fit most small businesses with today, sometimes alongside one of the other two when a specific feature demands it.
TrueNAS: the most capable, if you're the service department
TrueNAS Community Edition is free, open source, and built on ZFS, which remains the file system I trust most with data that matters. Run it on hardware you pick yourself and you get capabilities the appliances charge for or simply don't offer, with no vendor able to change the licence terms on your drives.
The honest cost is that you are now the vendor. You choose the parts, you test the memory, you read the release notes before upgrading, and when something breaks at 9 p.m., support is a forum. For a personal machine owned by someone who enjoys that, it's the best value in this article. For a business, it's only appropriate when a specific person is accountable for it, and that person's time isn't free either.
So which one?
For a business, or a business owner who also wants it working at home: UNAS if your needs are storage and backup, which is most of you, or Synology if a specific app in its catalogue justifies the licensing. For personal use where tinkering is part of the appeal: build the TrueNAS box, learn ZFS, enjoy it. The mismatch cases are what I get called about: the business running on somebody's weekend TrueNAS build after that somebody moved on, and the two-person office paying appliance premiums for features nobody opened.
Before you spend anything
Whichever way you lean, check three things. Count your real capacity needs with redundancy subtracted, not the sticker total. Confirm the drives you plan to use are supported by the platform, which after 2025 is no longer a silly question. And decide where the backup of this NAS will live, because that second copy is part of the budget, not an accessory.
Buying storage is a ten-year relationship with your own data, and it's cheaper to argue with a plan than with a migration. If you want a second set of eyes on the shortlist before the order goes in, that's a conversation I have often.
